Studies say that 44% of Americans made New Year’s Resolutions to kick off 2015. The vast majority of resolutions were related to health changes and commitments. However, by the end of January 2015, only about 1 in 3 were still committed to fulfilling their resolution.
At Greentree, we want to encourage you and your family to consider a few simple resolutions that will help you pursue healthy smiles for 2016. Please read the article below and share it with your family and friends so that January may be a great start to a healthy, beautiful smile.
1. Brush Twice a Day
Simple. Easy. And, you’re probably already doing it. The American Dental Association recommends you brush at least twice a day for 2 minutes each time. Regular brushing is the number one habit to ensure that plaque does not have time to develop on your teeth.
Remember, don’t use too much pressure because pressing too hard with your toothbrush can damage your gums. Let the bristles do the work, not your muscles. And, don’t take days off. Regular brushing is the key. So make sure you and your kids make brushing a consistent habit in 2016.
2. Floss Before You Brush
Studies say that only 5% of American floss regularly. At Greentree, we won’t beat you up about it, but it is incredibly important. Gums not properly cared for with regular flossing can become a wide open door to unhealthy bacteria entering your blood stream and increasing your chances of heart disease and other issues. The bacteria IN-BETWEEN your teeth can potentially cause far more damage than the plaque and bacteria ON the front and back of your teeth.
The American Dental Association says flossing before you brush helps make brushing more effective: With less plaque between your teeth, the fluoride in toothpaste reaches more parts of your mouth.
3. Swish, Swish, Swish
Mouthwash can have a beneficial impact on your overall oral health. Used after flossing and brush, mouthwash can help prevent plaque buildup and cavities, strengthen enamel, kill bacteria, and freshen your breath. Anyone who gets close to you may greatly appreciate your fresh breath. So, if you don’t already use mouthwash, we recommend you add it to your oral health habits in 2016.
